Gopal Rai, Environment Minister, stated that the Delhi Government is planning to come up with a green start-up policy to promote alternatives for single-use plastics. A meeting was held at Delhi Secretariate with 17 start-ups and self-help groups proposing and displaying plastic alternatives such as carry bags, plastics, jute, and other bio-degradable materials.

Rai stressed that the start-ups involved in manufacturing or marketing SUPs should have another source of income hence at the exhibition such opportunities can be explored by the company. Adding to the statement, Rai said that a public awareness campaign will be starting from June 1 to reduce the use of SUPs. He also added that MCD has already prepared a list of shops that sell single-use plastic to link them up with start-ups working on SUP alternatives.

This step was taken to combat pollution, especially air pollution. However, the Government is coming up with solutions regarding two main obstacles in the process, i.e., Impact on income and Awareness of the alternatives.
